An Illinois road construction worker has died in an accident while pouring concrete. According to local news sources, 51-year-old Zane Martin of Stonefort, Illinois, was killed when a box culvert collapsed and sent the man into over a foot of wet concrete.

The fatal worker accident took place on Route 146 in Alexander County, Illinois, were a road crew was working on the Bill Emerson Memorial Bridge near East Cape Girardeau. Workers employed with Jones Construction of Marion, Illinois, were pouring concrete on Tuesday afternoon when an unexpected collapse sent one worker into the wet cement, where he was trapped.

Emergency responders, which included Cape Girardeau firefighters, were able to remove the body in about 25 minutes, but by then it was too late to save the man, a supervisor. One firefighter on the scene explained the confusion at the time of the accident, and said that upon arrival construction workers through more than one person might be trapped. He also said that their team did not have experience on rescue involving wet concrete, but that they had worked with the unusual situation.

It is unclear what caused this fatal on-the-job accident, and several Illinois agencies are expected to investigate the matter to determine whether or not the construction agency was at fault for the collapse and whether or not similar construction accidents can be prevented in the future. The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) will also investigate – as they do every fatal worker accident.
