Volvo Cars of North America has issued a recall for 2012 S60 models due to a complication with the software responsible for controlling the fuel pump system.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that the software used to control the fuel pumps may experience compatibility complications that could result in an inadequate transport of fuel to the pump unit.

In certain cases, the NHTSA pointed out, the glitch could cause engine hesitation or worse. Although the fuel gauge may indicate that gas is in the tank, the software glitch causes confusion in the components, and if unchecked, the S60 could stall on the road, posing a major safety hazard.

The recall covers vehicles manufactured from November 18 2010 to May 5 2011, and is expected to impact 7,558 units. Volvo has announced that dealers will be upgrading the software for the engine control module at no charge. The recall officially began around June 17, 2011.
