May 3, 2011 - Consumer product recalls affect more than just consumers who purchase defective products at retail stores.

A Pennsylvania family mourns the loss of their infant son after he suffocated when he became trapped in a Graco Quattro stroller that was recalled by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission in October 2010. The recalled strollers posed a potential risk of entrapment and strangulation when the child is not harnessed.

The infant was sleeping face-down in the stroller at a family picnic. His mother found he had slipped between the stroller tray and the seat, becoming trapped and unable to breathe. His mother found him unresponsive and he was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The stroller in question, Graco Quattro model 7111BKW, was recalled due to this hazard. When a product is recalled, it is pulled from retail sales immediately and it is illegal for stores to sell these products. Unfortunately, product recall laws are applicable only for retailers and do not regulate second-hand sales. In this case, the family had purchased the stroller at a garage sale and was unaware of the product recall until the tragedy.

When you are purchasing any type of child product, whether at retail or second-hand, you should first conduct a consumer product safety search to determine if the product is in good standing. The CPSC maintains a database of product recalls and allows consumers to research second-hand items like cribs, strollers, and child safety seats before purchasing.

If your child has suffered serious injury from a dangerous or defective child product you should contact a St. Louis defective product attorney immediately to discuss your case.
