Chicago Boxed Beef Distributors Inc., a Shorewood, Ill. company has recalled about 3,200 pounds of raw and ready-to-eat sausage food products, the USDA reports.
The products were handled in a way inconsistent with measures prescribed to avoid cross-contamination between raw and ready-to-eat products. Furthermore, the product labels were not approved by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service. Chicago Boxed Beef Distributors failed to document the steps required to produce safe, sanitary products.
The recall names 3.6-pound boxes of "Sausage Links & Cooked Sausage Patties," which contain 2 unlabeled packages. The boxes are labeled with the number "EST. 17126" inside the USDA inspection mark and are identifiable by the item code "9004." These products were sold to a distributor for door-to-door sale in Florida, Illinois, Kentucky, South Carolina, and Texas.
The potential cross-contamination was discovered during a routine inspection by FSIS in-plant inspection personnel. The inspection turned up evidence indicating the establishment produced food precuts without a proper food safety plan for handling ready-to-eat products. As a result, the FSIS has deemed the products adulterated.
