Mazda has issued a recall of 2008-9 Mazda 3 and Mazdaspeed 3 models that will affect around 409,000 vehicles globally, including about 103,000 in the U.S. The problem prompting the recall has to do with the windshield wiper motor, which Mazda says can short circuit over time.

Reports of the wiper failures, due to the wiper's ground terminal which can easily become bent, began filtering in during late 2009. Mazda told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that in 2010, the automaker decided to investigate the wiper motor defect and opted to continue monitoring the problem after discovering the cause.

Mazda claims the frequency of the incident was relatively low and that they had not received enough reports of wiper failure to constitute a recall. They granted that the sudden malfunction of the wiper motor could escalate the conditions that might cause a crash, especially during inclement weather.

Recently, Mazda announced that although it was not aware of any accidents related to the malfunction, there had been enough wiper motor failures to warrant a recall.
