Champaign, IL - Nearly 18,000 model helicopters and replacement parts have been recalled voluntarily by the company that imports them, Horizon Hobby, Inc. of Champaign, Ill.
About 16,600 units were distributed in the United States, and Health Canada has issued a similar announcement indicating that approximately 1,300 of the same units that were sold in Canada are also being recalled.
The products recalled are:
- Blade mCP X Bind-N Fly, model number BLH3580;
- Ready to Fly Remote Control Model Helicopter, model number BLH3500; and
- Blade mCP X Main Blade Grips with Bearings replacement part, model number BLH3514.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the product recall after Horizon Hobby received an estimate of more than 300 reports of the rotor blades on the top of the model helicopter releasing from the rotor head while in use, posing a serious impact and laceration hazard to the user and anyone nearby.
There were 34 reports of the blades flying off and hitting someone and 12 reports of laceration injuries as a result of the product defect.
Manufactured in China, the model helicopters were sold nationwide in March 2011 for about $200 and the replacement part was sold for about $10.
