May 20, 2011 - Missouri officials are discussing whether to install guard cables on Kansas Highway 10, but the budget may prohibit the addition to the highway safety plan.

The idea of guard cables on K-10 was brought to attention when a young child was fatally injured while traveling with her family when a vehicle crossed over the median and struck the family's minivan.

The Kansas Department of Transportation thinks the addition is unnecessary and a waste of money. The costs of adding guard cables on the sides of K-10 will cost $150,000 per mile of guard cable. Instead, the Kansas Department of Transportation suggested providing greater highway safety by expanding the spaces on either sides of the highway and adding "rumble strips" on the shoulders of the highway.

When an accident involves poor highway design or a lack of sufficient safety features, your potential injury claim becomes much more complex.
