General Motors has issued a recall for over 47,000 units of 2011 Cadillac SRX crossover passenger cars. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that the head air bag protection for a passenger in the front seat will not inflate if the seat is unoccupied, which poses a safety risk to any passengers sitting in the back if an accident should occur.

GM claimed no injuries had been reported but NHTSA pointed out that the owner's manual indicates the air bags will inflate regardless of whether or not someone sits in the front seat. However, the air bag sensors are programmed to deactivate the passenger side air bags if nobody is seated in the front passenger seat.

Considering the conflict between the owner's manual and the actual operations of the vehicle, the NHTSA says the SRX is not compliant with federal safety standards.

The recall applies to vehicles manufactured between February 2, 2010 and April 29, 2011 that were sold in North America, The majority of the vehicles are in the US, but GM said the recall will affect about 3,000 units in Canada and Mexico.
