The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced that Changzhou Globe Tool Group Co. Ltd. of China will be recalling the Task Force 5-ton electric log splitter. The CPSC reports that the log splitter was sold exclusively at Lowe's Home Improvement stores nationwide, from January 2008 to March 2011.

The electric log splitters' hydraulic arm, which slides under the handle used to move the machine during its use, poses a risk for laceration and amputation to individuals who might place their hands on the handle while the splitter is in operation.

The log splitters are black and silver and are available under the manufacturing model number 26083 and item number 241483.

There have already been 2 reports of injury,
as a result of the lack of awareness about the hazard of placing hands on the handle during operation. An 18-year-old man suffered a fingertip amputation and a 60-year-old man sustained a finger laceration. Both were injured after placing their hands on the handle while the log splitter was in use.

Owners of the electric log splitter, which sold for about $300 at Lowe's stores across the country, should immediately cease usage of the log splitter and contact Changzhou Globe at 1-866-456-8934. Changzhou Globe will provide a free set of warning labels as well as placement instructions to indicate the warning that exists.

Approximately 20,000 units will be affected by the recall.
