The discovery of the capacity for stem cells in the lung to potentially repair and replace lung tissue is very significant. This could pave the way for treatments to be available one day for conditions such as pulmonary hypertension, emphysema and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Researchers were able to regenerate a healthy portion of the lung and recreate some tissue after a period of about 2 weeks. While this is good news, before they can even think about a phase 1 clinical trial, they will first need to do animal testing.
Stem cells could live for as long as 80 years, placed in the right environment. So this has been providing great hope to researchers and scientists who continue to look for ways to combat many of the debilitating diseases that strike people.
