Since May 2011, Hewlett-Packard Company (HP) has recalled an abundance of its notebook computer batteries, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has reported. This is an expansion of previous recalls in 2009 and 2010.

The lithium-ion batteries, used in some HP and Compaq computers, are subject to overheating, which can cause property damage and serious burn injuries. Since May 2010, Hewlett-Packard has reported 7 incidents of the batteries causing burn injuries, one incident of smoke inhalation, and 36 cases of property damage.

Hewlett-Packard recommends that HP notebook computer owners contact the company to check if they have defective lithium batteries that can overheat when the computer is in use. HP will replace every defective lithium battery for free. For more information, call 1-888-202-4320.
